Balanced Literacy

Balanced Literacy Overview: Elementary and Secondary

What it is…
It is a comprehensive approach to reading and writing instruction. The 6 components of Balanced Literacy for the elementary level are:
  1. Read Aloud
  2. Whole Group Shared Reading
  3. Small Group Guided Reading (and stations)
  4. Independent Reading
  5. Word Study
  6. Writing
Literacy in Every Classroom (secondary) focuses on the use of strategies to: deepen interaction with the text, use evidence, collaborate with others, create meaning, and scaffold text and questions.

When it should happen…
Students should receive instruction in each component of Elementary Balanced Literacy every day.
Secondary students should receive literacy instruction in all classrooms daily through interaction with text, use of strategies, rigorous questions and connections to real life.
